Nut Aware Policy
Nut Aware Policy
East Richmond Education Centre is a Nut Aware School. Foods containing tree nuts, peanuts, peanut oil, and peanut butter should not be taken to school. We have a student who has a severe life threatening allergy to these products. Please help us keep all students safe by reading ingredient labels on all food products to check to see if they contain or may contain tree nuts, peanuts or peanut oil. Please do not send pea butter or wow butter as it is confusing to students, staff and parents/guardians. If purchasing baked goods from eating establishments and their products are known to be processed at the facility with other nut products then they should not be brought to school due to the high risk of cross contamination. If you are unsure, it is always better to err on the side of safety and choose an alternate snack or lunch.
If nut products are found at school, they will be removed from the child’s lunch and replaced with an alternate snack and parents/guardians will be contacted.
Also a reminder that we are asking parents/guardians not to bring in baked goods for special occasions to give out to the class as it is difficult to know for certain if it has come into contact with nuts. Vegetable and fruit trays are great alternatives.
It is best to look at the labels of any packaged products as ingredient lists change frequently.
For information on the many common names that identify allergen ingredients on food labels refer to the Health Canada Fact Sheets at: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit/allerg/fa-aa/index_e.html. In addition, the Anaphylaxis Canada website (http://www.anaphylaxis.ca) is an excellent source of information for parents/guardians and educators.
Thank you for your continued support. Student safety is always a top priority.
